The Tampa Jazz Club is proud to present the area’s premiere jazz trio, LA LUCHA, debuting music from their forthcoming CD . As an additional treat, the group will welcome singer Ona Kirei, from Barcelona and now based in Tampa, for several songs.
For well over a decade, La Lucha (pianist John O’Leary, bassist Alejandro Arenas, and drummer Mark Feinman) has developed a sound that transcends genre and classification. Their live performances and four albums have gained an avid following. They’ve also become the go-to band for prominent visiting musicians, and are featured regularly at the area’s major festivals. La Lucha has just recorded in New York with prominent guests including Ken Peplowski (also their producer), saxophonists Melissa Aldana and Houston Person, vibraphonist Chuck Redd and guitarist Diego Figueiredo (who played a brilliant solo concert at the last TJC concert at HCC, in early December). As we look forward to the national release of “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” on Arbors Records, the Tampa audience will hear the band’s latest musical ideas, and some stories from the sessions… and have a chance to pre-order the album!
We’re very excited to add to this concert an appearance by the band’s friend, Ona Kirei. New in the Bay Area from Barcelona two years ago, Ona’s specialty is the music of the Iberian Peninsula – incorporating Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, and Basque songs along with originals that show off her jazz and neo-soul approach. Her performances with La Lucha and other leading area players have been captivating.
