The Florida Senate on Wednesday unanimously passed a bill that would require local governments to allow what are known as “granny flats” or “carriage houses” in single-family residential areas. Sponsor Don Gaetz, R-Niceville, said the bill (SB 184) would help increase workforce housing as the state continues to grapple with affordable housing issues. The bill would require cities and counties to allow adding what are technically known as accessory dwelling units, which are independent living spaces added on properties. Current law says local governments can allow the dwelling units, but the bill would require them to do so. The House Intergovernmental Affairs Subcommittee on Wednesday approved a House version of the bill (HB 247), sponsored by Rep. Bill Conerly, R-Lakewood Ranch. It would need to clear the Commerce Committee before it could go to the full House.

Ii have a Homestead in Naples, Fl since 1994.
Interested in creating a granny flat for myself in my existing home by converting my garage without any major changes.
Would like to add a bathroom/plumbing. Where do I apply?
I hope this truly happens. I’m living in a house that has flooded twice with hurricanes, but I can’t afford to move to anything better because of the prices of homes. I’m 63 and disabled so I have a set income for the month (401K had to be cashed and used during pandemic to save my house and car, utilities, etc.). I know others are in worse straits, having no roof over their heads. I’m hoping this will help not just myself but so many that are in the same situation. God bless all!
