Ronny Elliott

Ronny Elliott was born in 1947. He insists that rock’n’roll was, too. Frequently referred to as a cult artist he has stories that he claims to be tired of telling. Elvis offered to teach him karate. He was assigned the lowly task of holding up Jimi’s Marshall cabinets in case he “whacked” them after opening the show. He has played on bills with Van Morrison, the Allman Brothers, Wilco, Sly & The Family Stone, Michael Bloomfield, Canned Heat, Steve Miller, NRBQ, Patti Smith, Pete Seeger, Steve Earle and lots of other folks that he looks up to. He has toured with Bo Diddley and Bill Haley and the Comets and backed Chuck Berry, the Coasters and Gene Vincent on tour. He is as comfortable onstage at Lincoln Center for the Roots of American Music Festival as he is cramped into a corner at the Borderline in London; as much at home in a dive bar down the street in Tampa as at the Woody Guthrie Festival in Okemah, Oklahoma.

For some reason a critics’ darling, Ronny has just released his ninth solo CD, I’ve Been Meaning To Write. He continues to tour, record and gripe. After years in the trenches and flop records on lots of labels with lots of bands he released his first solo effort in 1995. It seems to be a long road and Ronny considers that he has just started it.
