In the United States, about 27 million people have asthma or 8% of the population. Today is Lung Health Day.

The American Association for Respiratory Care founded Lung Health Day in 2003, in order to educate people about chronic lung diseases including asthma. Karen Frankland is a Lead Nurse for Education and Support at NIOX, a company that makes an asthma testing device.

“Alarmingly many people have asthma attacks every day. Many of which are or can be fatal. And the research indicates that up to two-thirds of these fatalities globally are avoidable or preventable. So, there are many things that can be done now to identify asthma, improve the treatment, control symptoms, and prevent asthma attacks.”

Doctors can measure airway inflammation through a FeNO test.

Getting regular health check-ups and healthy living can strengthen lung health.

Lung Health Day is observed every fourth Wednesday of October.
