Discovering New Music – WMNF’s June Hot Box

Share

We have a box in our music library that is stuffed full of new cds called the Hot Box. Some of them are new music from familiar artists, and others are just tasty new works by artists new to us. The music ranges around a lot of genres, but generally falls under the radio term of Triple A. There are some videos of music from these albums down below the list.

Here are some of the artists/a added to the Hot Box recently

Case-Lang-Veirscase/lang/veirs  Kind of a supergroup made up of Neko Case, kd lang, and Laura Veirs.  (Pitchfork review)

Colvin & Earle – Colvin & Earle  Another pairing of 2 popular WMNF artists, Shawn Colvin and Steve Earle, who navigate the same musical universe in totally different ways. (NPR review)

Fantastic Negrito – The Last Days of Oakland    Xavier Dphrepaulezz has an amazing story, but as Fantastic Negrito his singing and songs stand (and dance and fling themselves around) on their own. He just played live on Thursday’s It’s the Music show (6/16/16).

White Denim – Stiff   The Austin band came on the scene as a raw garage band, but they move into a rock revival sound on their great new release. (Consequence of Sound review)

Corrine Bailey Rae – The Heart Speaks in Whispers  Years ago Corrine played at my coffee lounge in St. Pete, and instead of running around like mad as usual, we all just stopped in amazement at her talent. And she is only better now. First album in six years from this British soul-folk artist. (All-Music review)

Paul Simon – Stranger to Stranger  Randy Wind, our Program Manager, quips Still creative after all these years and it is true. (Guardian review)

The Monkees – Good Times!  Really? Really! It is Peter and Mickey, and a really fun summer soundtrack. Check out the review from the hipsters at Consequence of Sound.

Various Artists – Day of the Dead  This one is a behemoth. Jambase has a good article about it and some tracks to listen to. 59 tracks!!! Yikes!

Fantastic Negrito (video of in-studio performance coming soon!) Lost in a Crowd
