A list of cold weather shelters open tonight

It will be cold, but probably no skiing in the flat lands of Tampa Bay.

Pinellas County

The cold night shelters for the homeless will be open on the following date(s):

  •  Monday and Tuesday Nights, January 6 & 7 2014

The shelters open at approximately 6 p.m., accept guests all night long, and close the following morning at approximately 6 a.m. Shelter guests are provided a hot evening meal, a warm safe place to spend the night, and breakfast the following morning. We will advise you should they open on additional nights.

Hillsborough County to Open Emergency Cold Weather Shelters Monday and Tuesday nights

Hillsborough County cold weather shelters will open Monday, Jan. 6 and Tuesday Jan. 7 for the homeless and those who live in homes without adequate heat. The National Weather Service expects the local wind chill factor to be in the 20s beginning Monday evening as well as Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Hillsborough County coordinates with the following organizations to provide cold weather shelters:

Brandon Community Center, 510 E. Sadie St. in Brandon This shelter opens at 6 p.m. and is for homeless individuals and families with children in the Brandon Area. Phone: 813-635-8179

Metropolitan Ministries, 2010 N. Florida Ave. in Tampa This shelter opens at 4 p.m. and is for families. After hours phone: 813-209-1077

Salvation Army, 1514 N. Florida Ave. in Tampa This shelter opens at 4 p.m. and is only for adults. After hours phone: 813-221-4440

Jackson Springs Recreation Center, 8620 Jackson Springs Road in Town 'N Country This shelter opens at 6:30 p.m. and is for adults and families. Phone 813-554-5064

Wimauma Community Center, 5705 Hillsborough St. in Wimauma This shelter opens at 6 p.m. and is for adults and families. Phone 813-635-3500

The Brandon Community Center, Jackson Springs Recreation Center, and Wimauma Community Center are also accepting donations of shelter supplies, such as hats, gloves, scarves, blankets, disinfectant wipes, disposable cups, coffee, creamer, paper plates, plastic utensils and sugar. Those wishing to donate supplies should contact each individual shelter.

Residents who need to be outside overnight or during the early morning hours are encouraged to dress in several warm layers and limit skin exposure to the wind. Pets should not be left outside during the cold weather. The lower than normal temperatures combined with strong winds could produce dangerous wind chills.

Pasco County Cold Weather Shelters will be opened at 6:00 p.m.

NOTE: Some shelters may offer additional specific services during severe weather.

United Way is going to provide cold weather hotel sheltering for families with children through Metropolitan Ministries.

Families with children needing shelter tonight and tomorrow night on the WEST side of the county should call Dan Campbell at 727-385-4170.

Pasco County Transportation provides service to cold weather shelters via routes 14, 21, 30 free of charge. Riders should tell the driver when boarding they are en route to a cold weather shelter.

Windmoor Healthcare is offering FREE CAB SERVICE to anyone in need of a lift to the various cold weather shelters in Pasco. To utilize this FREE SERVICE, please call Windmoor @ 727-548-5733.

Hernando County Residents that need to seek shelter from the cold may contact Jericho Road Ministries.

Sarasota County and Charlotte County Emergency Management have coordinated with the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army to provide cold weather sheltering for those in need. The following shelters will be open today at 6 p.m. and again on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 6 p.m.:
