Women’s Show 10/27 – “The Trump Effect” and Eyes on Russia

How many days left? Can you still count?  Have you already voted?

Unfortunately, although the campaign might end, the work of repairing and rebuilding is just beginning.  I have spent the week, you might say, looking through the eyes of non-voters – and People, “It ain’t pretty.”  First we will go back to school children, not high school, but K – Middle School.  Tell me, as a parent, are you having to monitor your children watching the news?  That kind of says it all, doesn’t it?  We will talk about the “Trump effect,” the impact of the presidential campaign on our nation’s schools – school children and teachers.

MAUREEN COSTELLO, Teaching Tolerance Director at the Southern Poverty Law Center, in April released a report on “Teaching the 2016 Election: The Trump Effect.”  The Southern Poverty Law Center is a non-partisan civil rights organization dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of society.  It neither endorses political candidates or engages in electioneering activity.  An important project of the Southern Poverty Law Center is called Teaching Tolerance and is dedicated to reducing prejudice, improving inter-group relations and supporting equitable school experiences for our nation’s children.  I hate to say it, but we are flunking teaching tolerance.

Do you wonder how Russia might have responded to the presidential election third debate?  It can be a sobering experience to read some of the translations of Russian opinions.  Maybe some of us see the comments as political, but many experts feel our relationship with Russia is the most dangerous it has ever been.  The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Francis Dunford has warned both the US Senate as well Secretary of State John Kerry in no uncertain terms that a “No Fly Zone” over Syria would lead to war with both Syria and Russia, intimating a dangerous process of military escalation .  China has stated that it is backing Russia in its efforts to defeat the “terrorists” in Syria. Instead of a no-fly zone, perhaps we need a no-kill zone? Serious, serious business.  This is not politics as usual.  KATRINA VANDEN HEUVEL, Editor and Publisher of The Nation, will discuss the dangers of our attitudes now.  With Stephen Cohen, Ph.D., she co-edited Voices of Glasnost: Interviews with Gorbachev’s Reformers.”  We can’t wait until this election is over to demand diplomacy over war.

If you actually READ the SPLC’s “Trump Report” survey you’ll find that they themselves label it as “not scientific” as none of the respondents were chosen at random.

The same “report” states that Teacing Tolerance,” the wing of the SPLC that created the survey, reaches more than 400,000 US teachers each month, and yet the entire “report” is built entirely on 2,000 anonymous, unverifiable replies.

Either 398,000 teachers ignored the SPLC survey email or the company cherry picked 2,000 “reliable” people who would respond correctly.

In reality, the SPLC’s spurious “survey” is little more than a fundraising ploy that allows the company to agitate its largely Progressive donor base by invoking Trump’s name while narrowly skirting the strict IRS regulations that prohibit 501(c)(3) nonprofits from promoting or denigrating political candidates.

As with most things SPLC, follow the money and you’ll find the con.

And as far as “improving inter-group relations,” it’s worth noting that the SPLC is currently celebrating its 45th consecutive year with no minorities in leadersip positions. With 300 employees and more than $300 million in cash on hand, the Executive Suite of the SPLC is as lily white today as when the company opened for business in 1971.

Even Ms. Costello’s own Teaching Tolerance wing has been led by “whites only” since its inception in 1991. THESE are your experts?
