What do the candidates think about Fracking?
In the democratic debate Saturday night, both Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton were asked if they would allow fracking if they were elected president. Bernie answered with one word, “NO!” Hillary gave a far more complex and nuanced response which suggested “probably not – at least under the present circumstances.” The Republicans? They don’t seem able to move beyond the mud-slinging to discuss substantive issues. Can you imagine any of them being opposed to fracking? I wish someone would ask… On tomorrow’s show we will discuss fracking with Mariah Blake. She is a Murrey Marder Nieman Fellow in Watchdog Journalism at Harvard University. Her work has appeared in Mother Jones, the New Republic, Foreign Policy, the Washington Monthly and the Columbia Journalism Review.
Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt
Women’s bodies, as we are all aware, have been in the cross hairs for years. Jessica Mason Pieklo, from RH Reality Check will talk about Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt. She feels you can’t understand this case before the Supreme Court unless you go back 35 years to the Hyde Amendment and McCrae v. Harris. In McCrae v. Harris the Supreme Court decided that women had a right to an abortion, but the government had no obligation to help them afford it. Fast forward 35 years and TRAP laws are standing in the way of many women’s rights.
