In the Groove is one of WMNF’s mindblowing jam band shows, on Tuesday nights 10pm-midnight. Thor brings bands in to play live on the show, and is a fixture at music festivals around the state and beyond. Here are his picks:
Friday Night
Hot bands to open and close, so it’s going to be a long night. Bath Salt Zombies open the festival in the Cantina and they are great! They’re from Daytona, and they put on a helluva entertaining show. Great story tellers, and jamming music. You may even get to see a theremin in action.Christie Lenee opens the NWB, and there’s not a more musically inspired and talented guitar player around. She’s been live on the show a number of times, and continues to amaze.
Row Jomah closes NWB, they’re a five piece band who are all very talented. Lot’s of cool originals with a few choice covers mixed in, and of course WAHH (Cuban Club Theater) will send you home with a cool jamming groove in your soul. In between, I’m looking to catch another set of Jim White VS Packway Handle Band (first one was GMF) on the Cuban Club Mainstage, Gabriel Garzon-Montano (Theater) and Blair Crimmons and The Hookers (Ballroom).
Saturday Night
Well all I can saw is the Mainstage cooks from beginning to end. You could get your money’s worth just staying there all night. Dropin Pickup is a cool new band that’s making waves in the area, they start it off. Honey Island Swamp Band, from Louisiana is gathering fans in the jam scene with their infectious grooves, and DDBB (Dirty Dozen Brass Band) is the real deal NOLA sound.
If you’re going to stray, I’d suggest catching Galbreath Group (NWB), local young family band that will amaze you. The end of the night at The Ritz is the jamband place to be with Holey Miss Moley from Orlando funkin it up at 9p,Orgone, whose lead singer will melt you at 10:10, and Come Back Alice from Sarasota at 11:35, who rock an old soul groove through young kids bodies are a must.
Hope to see you there in the Sweet Spot…
