The Sound Safari takes you on a musical journey around the world stopping at various cultural hubs know for their rich musical traditions such Haiti, Jamaica, Brazil, the Cape Verde Islands, Mali, the Congo and India.
Every Saturday Morning we get the day going with artists such as Oumou Sangare, Salif Keita, The Mahotella Queens, Lura, Diblo Dibala, Rachid Taha, Marisa Monte, Eva María Ayllón, Tabou Combo, Kassav, Anouska Shankar and more. Grab a cup of coffee, sit back, and enjoy the journey.
John Dubrule has been a programmer at WMNF starting in 1980. His first program was called Radical Noise and featured punk and new wave music. The original Sound Safari show aired from 1988 to 2007. During that time John and his then wife Pam Wiener were involved in bringing many performers to the Tampa Bay area, through their not-for-profit organization, The Nairobi Night Club. John is a partner in an immigration law firm where he is happy to help people from around the world find the American Dream.
Music journalist Marcus Moore once wrote, “Some people are attracted to what they know, others to what they don’t know.” Ali definitely falls into the second category, letting her curiosity lead the way in putting together interesting playlists while learning the musical backstory. She builds on her past experience of studying French and Francophone communities as well as the music she’s heard along the way. She is pleased to continue the legacy of sharing and connecting over music from around the world right here at our local WMNF station.
