Protests and civil disobedience expected in St. Petersburg after Ferguson grand jury announcement

Share

When the decision of whether to indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson comes down, there are plans for protests and civil disobedience in St. Petersburg.

On Friday WMNF interviewed Omali Yeshitela about those plans. He’s chair of the African People’s Socialist Party.

In Missouri, activists, authorities and the family of Michael Brown called for calm today as a grand jury drew closer to an announcement in the Ferguson police shooting. But a spokesperson for St. Louis County’s top prosecutor said the panel is still in session. There was no indication precisely when the grand jury would render a decision.

Police and government leaders are preparing to outline an agreement reached with activist groups spelling out how protesters associated with those organizations will conduct themselves following a grand jury announcement.

Attorney General Eric Holder is exhorting police across the nation to prepare appropriately for demonstrations and “minimize needless confrontation” with protesters.

A federal judge has issued court orders that prevent Missouri police from stopping media and others from recording officers.
